Native Calling
Winifred "Fred" Burkle
age 30 | gender Female | Power (If mutant) Fred is a normal human woman with no supernatural abilities; however, her brilliant mathematical mind, immense knowledge of quantum physics and science, and a natural ability in designing inventions make her an important asset of Angel's team. Due to spending so many years in Pylea, she also has a limited knowledge of the Pylean language and culture.During this time, Fred also acquires some reasonably good fighting skills, mainly with weapons such as stakes, guns, swords, knives, etc. Later, when Jasmine takes over Los Angeles, she's forced to face down all of Los Angeles on her own, and it is shown that she is also able to hold her own unarmed, effortlessly taking out a few armed Jasminites, including one armed SWAT member. It's seen in Season Three that she likes plants, actually talking to them during her period of mild insanity. After undergoing the transformation to Illyria, she can talk to plants while at full power. |
BIRTHDATE 02/13 | SEXUALITY Straight | Species Half Demon |
PERSONALITY,
Fred is highly imaginative and easily distracted (ooh, pretty crystals!). She comes up with all kinds of crazy theories about how things are connected, from alien abductions to more practical things. Fred is quick on the draw, able to figure out stuff without much information; she instinctively knows things about people, places, and events. Sometimes, she even has a flash of insight into what’s likely to happen, and returns to handle it just in time. Fred talks constantly about her ideas and is fascinated with new possibilities and inventions. She has a scientific mind and is able to analyze complex systems and put them to work with very little effort; her walls are covered in mathematical problems; she tinkers with new inventions in her spare time (without even needing to pay much attention to what she’s doing), and she can sometimes be astonishingly blunt and pragmatic (I mean, what if your arms are cut off?).When Angel asks Fred how she is feeling, she has eight different words to express her emotions. She frequently talks about her feelings – her insecurities, her sadness, her happiness, and her budding affection for her “boys.” Fred really does care about her friends and feels drawn to protecting them, but also worries that she might let them down, talk too much, or not be what they need. She’s good at encouraging others and prefers to think the best of others… even Spike.Though she isn’t all that interested in reliving her past, particularly since it’s so traumatic, Fred remembers an astounding amount of information and details about her interests. She asks lots of questions to find out as many facts as she can, and frequently references movies, books, plays, and music in general conversation, weaving things she’s heard, seen, and read into broader contexts.
HISTORY,
“No, I am not—I am not the damsel in distress. I am not some case! I have to work this. I lived in a cave for five years in a world where they killed my kind like cattle. I am not gonna be cut down by some monster flu, I am better than that! What a wonder... How very scared I am.”
―Winifred Burkle
Winifred "Fred" Burkle is a physics student and member of Angel Investigations, and later the head of Wolfram & Hart's Science Division.
Born in Texas, Fred moved to Los Angeles to attend graduate school at UCLA until one fateful day when her jealous physics professor, Oliver Seidel, used dark magic to banish her to the demon dimension Pylea, where she spent five years as a human slave; the time there took a serious toll on Fred's sanity. In 2001, Fred was finally saved and returned to Earth when the vampire Angel and his friends arrived in Pylea and liberated them from the control of the Covenant of Trombli.
Upon recovering from her mental trauma, Fred joined Angel Investigations, adding her smarts and scientific knowledge to the team. Unfortunately, when Angel Investigations took over Wolfram & Hart in late 2003/early 2004, Fred met her end when one of her coworkers, Knox, brought in an ancient sarcophagus which infected her with the essence of the Old One Illyria, and despite her friends' best efforts, Fred perished and her body was taken over by Illyria itself; though her soul was apparently completely destroyed in the process, Illyria retained Fred's memories and some of her emotions and personality traits.
However, after Illyria's death and the reversal of the end of magic, Fred was resurrected in London, actually Fred and IIlyria share the same body.
